Adoptions Details

The Broome County Humane Society

Come on in during our open hours to select your new family member and apply for adoption. Staff are on hand to assist with any questions.

Please note: We have many great animals available for adoption and our goal is to place them into great homes as quickly as we can. We are lucky to often have several families interested in the same animal and therefore hope that you understand that we cannot place a hold on any animals or guarantee that you will receive your first choice.

Medically Needy Animals

The Humane Society comes to the rescue of many different animals. Sometimes our rescues and turn-over animals are physically and mentally ready to be adopted. Other times they need a little bit more love and care to be ready. Whether they need a family to nurse them back to health, or work with them on their manners, there are some that just need more “one-on-one” attention than we can give at the shelter.

Sometimes we have animals considered too “old” to be adopted, and really just need a loving family to hold their paw until they cross the “Rainbow Bridge”.

If you have room in your home and heart for an animal that really needs your love, please call the shelter or stop down for more information.

For Seniors

The Humane Society recognizes the challenge of raising a puppy or kitten particularly for our senior friends. That doesn’t mean that they should be without the companionship a dog or cat can give.

We have created a unique adoption program for seniors (age 65+) living in our community to partner them with our senior pets (7+ years). The standard adoption fee will be cut in half. This includes licensing, a vet checkup, and up-to-date shots. We pledge to the owners and their new pet that if they ever find themselves unable to care for the pet and have run out of options, we will gladly accept the pet back at The Humane Society. Please check our Petfinder site often for a list of animals that are in this program

TOP SIX REASONS TO OWN AN OLDER PET:

1. Older pets are housetrained.

2. Older pets won’t chew your shoes and scratch your furniture.

3. Older pets settle in easily, because they’ve learned what it takes to get along with others.

4. Older pets are good at giving love once they get into a new, loving home. They are grateful for the 2nd chance.

5. What You See Is What You Get: older pets have grown into their shape and personality.

6. Older pets let you get a good night’s sleep! They don’t need nighttime comforting or bathroom breaks.
