Things to Consider Before Adopting

The Broome County Humane Society

There are several things to consider in your life before taking on the responsibility of bringing an animal into your home. Some things to consider are the following:

  • Are you financially stable? Financial stability including but not limited to vet bills/care costs (up to $2000/year per pet if there is an unexpected health issue), behavior training costs, looking into the future at a 10-year commitment with finances.
  • Are you emotionally prepared? Will you be patient and understanding of your new animal?
  • Are you preparing for future children? Please make sure it is an appropriate match. Some animals can be selective of humans and might not be the best around babies and children. Please take this in consideration so your fur baby can stay in your family for the rest of their days!
  • Do you have other animals in your household already? Please make sure all animals are properly introduced before adopting to ensure they will get along and accept one another!
  • RESEARCH the breed of animal, requirements to allow appropriate placement within location of home, lifestyle, etc.
  • Are you willing to continue to learn about animal issues you may face?
  • Is your family on board with decision? Everyone in a household should agree on bringing in a new family member into a home!
