FAQ and Resources
What are your hours of operations?

Broome County Humane Society is open Tuesday-Friday from 12PM-5PM and Saturday from 11AM-4PM. We are closed to the general public on Sunday and Monday.

Is there a cost associated with adopting from BCHS?

Adoption fees can be found on our Adoption Page.

What should I do if I lose my pet?

If your pet is microchipped, first call the company they are chipped through to report your lost pet. Contact or visit other local shelters and agencies to get the word out, including animal control, veterinary offices, and shelters. Search and alert your neighborhood thoroughly, asking mail men, delivery drivers, etc. to keep watch. Leave food and water in your yard along with something of familiar scent. Put up “lost pet” posters/flyers both in your immediate area and on social media and include as much detail as possible. Check local “lost pet” listings frequently, such as the “Lost & Found Pets Broome County, NY” on Facebook. Do not give up and keep searching!

What should I do if I find a stray animal?

Check the pet for an identification tag on its collar. If it is a dog, call your town’s local dog control officer to handle appropriately as required by law. Submit a found pet report to local shelters, veterinary offices, and social media sites to increase visibility. Put up “found” posters in the immediate area the pet was located. If you are unable to locate the owner, call appropriate shelters found on our Resources page.

What is the difference between a community (stray) cat and a feral cat?

Community, or stray cats, are socialized to people, can be easily approached, and eventually adopted into homes. Feral cats are not socialized, often fearful of humans and cannot be handled or adopted. They are essentially wild animals and do not like direct contact. Feral cats cannot be brought into a shelter setting. Please contact the shelter if you are unsure if a cat is stray or feral.

What should I do if I find a cat that appears to be feral?

Take note of whether the cat’s ear is “tipped.” This is an indication the cat is feral and has previously been trapped, fixed, and released back into the community. If the cat is not spayed or neutered, seek the assistance of a Trap Neuter Release program for assistance.

I need to rehome my animal-what should I do?

Rehoming your pet with The Humane Society should only be considered after all other options have been exhausted. Remember that once the animal is signed over, the pet is no longer under your ownership. Rehoming and relinquishing animals are done on an APPOINTMENT BASIS ONLY, and a $20 turnover fee is required.

What services do you offer?

The Broome County Humane Society offers the following services:

  • Pet Boarding (Dogs only)
  • Pet Grooming (Dogs & Cats)
  • End of Life Services, including Euthanasia & Cremation
  • Spay & Neuter Services
  • Safekeeping
  • Microchipping (must have current rabies vaccination)

The Broome County Humane Society DOES NOT offer public vaccinations, public veterinarian practice or emergency veterinary services. For more information, please visit Services.

I found a wild animal-what should I do?

Please use caution in all situations that involve wild animals. If found, a full list of your local licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators can be found under Resources. Broome County Humane Society cannot accept wildlife!

What are low-cost options for Vets and Veterinary Services?

There are several low-cost resources for both services and veterinarian care in Broome County. Please visit Resources for a full list.

I need to put my pet down-Can you help?

The Broome County Humane Society DOES NOT euthanize healthy or adoptable animals. If your pet is nearing the end of its life or suffering from an illness, please first consult with your veterinarian to determine if euthanasia is the best option. Owner requested euthanasia to aggressive animals is only permitted with a Veterinarian or trainer referral. If euthanasia is the best or only option for your animal, please call us at 607-724-3709 x 103 to discuss.

I am looking to adopt. How do I begin the process?

Every Broome County Humane Society adoption requires an up-to-date adoption application to be completed online. Please complete the application associated with the animal that you are interested in.

  1. Applications require 2 personal references not related to you and a current landlord reference.
  2. Applications that are incomplete will not be considered.
  3. Applications can take 7-10 days to process; at which time we will alert you have been approved. Please be sure that your voicemail is not full.

Your patience during this time is appreciated. There are often several people interested in the same animal. Placing an animal on your application in no way guarantees you will get that specific animal. Animals are placed on a first-come, first-serve basis, if the family is the best fit. To view available animals and apply for them, please visit Available Animals.

Do you offer public Spay & Neuter services?

Yes. The Broome County Humane Society offers low-cost options to have your pet spayed or neutered through Shelter Outreach Services. Please visit our Spay & Neuter page for more information.

What should I do if I suspect Animal Cruelty?’

Animal cruelty is illegal in every state. If you suspect cruelty, please call us at 607-724-3709 x 108 or email cruelty@bchumanesoc.com. If an animal is in serious danger, please call your local police department, the Broome County Sheriff’s Department, or the New York State Police immediately to report the abuse/abandonment. If you witness animal cruelty in progress, and do not know the number to the appropriate agency, CALL 911. Animal cruelty is a crime, and the police dispatcher will be able to determine which department should respond.
